Download Free Personal Branding Book by Chip Hartman (of ETP fame)
Download Free Personal Branding Book by Chip Hartman (of ETP fame) Chip Hartman has done it again. This book is an excellent resource. And its a free download. You dont even have to give your name and email address to get it. Build Your Brand is a 54 page ebook that is kind of a Part II to The Basics of Personal Branding (also a free ebook download it here). I have gone through the book and enthusiastically give my stamp of approval. Much of what I talk about in my keynote presentations is included in this book. Chip breaks it down in a great way, and the methods he presents should really help you put your brand together well, and understand what to do with it once you have it put together. I think both of these are going to be resources that even personal branding experts use and rely on to help their clients. These are excellent personal branding resources. Chip is a friend Ive only met once in person, many years ago at a dinner in New Jersey. Hes well awesome. He does writing, editing, layout and that kind of stuff as a freelancer. If you have any writing/layout projects, give him a holler (his email and phone number are on the first page of the book). If you want to know how good he is, just download his free ebook and you can judge for yourself. Too Busy for Dental Hygiene Here is what you Should Never Skip! -
Too Busy for Dental Hygiene Here is what you Should Never Skip! - The daily hassle can easily make you skip parts of your routine, such as removing makeup or flossing. On the long run, these occasional skips can become highly dangerous for your health. Sleeping with makeup on can ruin your face, while skipping your dental hygiene routine can leave you with bad breathe, cavities, yellow teeth and even parodontosis. The benefits of cleaning your teeth are less visible than the benefits of exercising, for example, which leads to the dangerous habit of not following the dentists orders to the letter. Luckily, the details count a lot when it comes to your teeth. Here are some things you should never skip when it comes to dental hygiene and your oral health. Brush for two minutes Dentists from the 505 Dental Associates clinic are used to patients telling them they brush twice a day, every day. But when it comes to how long they brush their teeth, patients fail to give the correct response. In reality, most people brush for a maximum of 45-50 seconds, instead of two minutes. Dentists insist that brushing your teeth for two minutes is highly important, so stop brushing your teeth in a hurry. Never skip brushing You are on a hurry, so you rinse with mouthwash and pick up a mint after lunch to keep your breathe decent. If this is a familiar pattern for you, your teeth are in danger. Mouthwash is not a replacement for brushing, as it doesnt kill enough bacteria in your mouth. There is no replacement for the toothbrush when it comes to cleaning your teeth properly, so do your best to brush twice a day, every day. Dont skip your annual dental check-up Very few people go to their dentist for their regular check-up, which is a big mistake. Dentists only get to see their patients when the latter are in pain, which is late, in many cases. Cavities and many other teeth problems can actually be prevented if your dentist spots potential issues and prevents them from actually turning into a problem. Turn to an electric toothbrush You might be tempted to buy a hard toothbrush, thinking it will be more effective in cleaning your teeth. Unfortunately, this is a myth. Hard bristles can damage your teeth enamel and cause you gums to bleed. You should invest in a medium toothbrush or an electrical one with soft bristles. The latter can help you brush for the entire two minutes, thanks to the built-in timer most electrical brushes have. Stop thinking of your teeth as being separated from your body You never thought a cavity can alter your overall well-being, right? You will be surprise to hear just how important it is to have healthy teeth for your overall health. A cavity can easily lead to tooth decay, infections and lots of other health problems. In order to be healthy you need to pay attention to your teeth, so start thinking of your mouth as part of your body. Include dental hygiene routine in your schedule, giving it the same importance as you give to your gym sessions and your healthy eating regime.

Year-end roundup Most loved and most hated posts of 2007
Year-end roundup Most loved and most hated posts of 2007 The best part of blogging is the community. I have been a columnist for a long time, but I have only been a blogger for a year and a half. And I have to say that the conversation part of blogging is amazing, and its something you dont get as a columnist. So heres a thank you to everyone who has been part of the conversation on this blog either by reading or responding or both. You have taught me so much. And my own attempts at perfecting my intersection of work and life are much less lonely and difficult because I do it with a community like this one. And, speaking of community, here are a few statistics about the blog, beginning with this list of posts that received the most comments this year. (This list is very skewed toward the end of the year, because the blog got more popular as the year progressed.) Five Steps to Taming Materialism from an Accidental Expert (77 comments) What Generation are You Part of, Really? Take this Test. (115 comments) My Financial History, and Stop Whining about Your Job (69 comments) Bad Career Advice: Do What You Love (72 comments) Stop Worrying that Your Twentysomething is Lost (89 comments) The End of Work as We Know It (74 comments) Five Situations when You Shouldnt Go to Graduate School (103 comments) Five Workplace Practices that Should be Over. Now. (73 comments) What if the Interviewer Never Calls You Back? (64 comments) Five Things People Say About Christmas that Drive Me Nuts (230 comments) Personal Favorites A lot of people write to me to ask me if I really write all my own posts. And a lot of people ask me how I have time to write so much. Its true that most posts take tons of time three or four hours when all is said and done. But really, the question is what would I do if I werent writing these posts? So often, the blog is a way for me to understand myself, and the people around me, and I have never had a job I love more than writing this blog. These are five posts that meant a lot to me to write, even if they were not the most popular in the comments section. My Name is Not Really Penelope An Unexpected Lesson About Procrastination My 9/11 Day. My Husband. The Meaning of My To-Do List. Stop Thinking Youll Get By on Your High I.Q. Big Announcement: Im Starting a Company! Favorite on Google: Marriage Counseling The first post about my marriage was a turning point in the blog traffic went up significantly, and has stayed there. This might be because even though I have some of the worst search engine optimization in the blogosphere, my blog now comes up number eight from the top when you search marriage counseling on Google. But the traffic surge also convinced me that the personal matters a lot in blogging. Information is a commodity on the Internet, and a good way to stand out is to infuse your posts with your personality. It has been suggested (see comments) that I change my tagline to be advice at the center of work and sex. I can see how this would be popular, and I maybe would do it, if I could figure out how to ever have sex again. For now, Im just having marriage trouble, and marriage-trouble traffic. My First Day of Marriage Counseling (176 comments) My Own Marriage and the Myth of the Stay-at-Home Dad (171 comments) 5 Communication Lessons Learned in Marriage Counseling (84 comments) Favorite Among Haters: Yahoo Finance Column Each week for the past year, I have heard from hundreds of people on Yahoo Finance complaining about the advice I give. Here is the Yahoo column that caused the most number of people to take the time to write a comment saying that Im an idiot: Ten New Etiquette Tips for the Workplace (2798 comments) Top Twentysomething Columns One of my favorite parts of the blog is the Twentysomething column. It was the way that I found a business partner, and its also a great way for me to learn because it always surprises me. The three most commented-on Twentysomething columns came from three different writers: Ryan Healy, Be Responsible, Go Back Home after College Jon Morrow, Why I Regret Getting Straight As in College Rebecca Thorman, The Rising Rift Between Gen X and Gen Y Thank you for a great year. I feel very lucky to be part of this community, and Im looking forward to another year of conversation, controversy and fun.

Why Do You Want to Leave Your Current Position - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Why Do You Want to Leave Your Current Position - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The dreaded question Why do you want to leave your current position? The one question most candidates dread is, Why do you want to leave your current position? You cannot say My boss is a jerk, or The work environment is toxic. If you do, the interviewer will likely think, Next candidate please! When asked this question, you absolutely, positively avoid saying anything negative. There are two reasons to not go negative: It will give the impression that you may be part of the problem. There are two sides to every story. The interviewer knows they are only hearing one side. By getting negative in an interview, you cannot avoid degrading your own attitude. If you followed my instructions in my post 3 Steps to Walking Into Your Interview with Confidence, you will be feeling good about yourself. This is key! Pivot the Answer to What You Want When you are asked the Why do you want to leave your current position? question, you can respond in the following way: My current job is fine (which may or may not be true), but what I am looking for isand then state what you are looking for in your next position. Next, ask a question about the possibilities of getting what you want. For example: Can you tell be about the initiatives you have in the areas of? It is important that you, rather than the interviewer, redirect or pivot the conversation back in a direction that you want to take. Be prepared for the interviewer to probe for more information, but absolutely do not go there. Resist the urge at all costs. I have previously written about three client examples. Take a look at these now: Robert A political science lecturer at a major university James An HR executive for a major insurance company Mary A marketing professional for a technology company All three examples were derived from real situations. In all three situations, the interviewee had a planned response prepared for the dreaded question. Being Prepared with Interview Questions You should come into any interview with at least 10 questions that you would like to get answered. Print them out and keep them in front of you. Take notes and record the interviewers answers on the paper. By writing down the responses, it gives you time to think about where to take the conversation next! Controlled pauses (that is my term) give you a chance to think about the flow of the conversation. Another example of a controlled pause is to restate the question you were just asked. Let me make sure I understand your question. You asked Remember it is YOUR DAMN INTERVIEW! Be prepared for the most common questions and the dreaded question why do you want to leave your current position? When your job is literally killing you
When your job is literally killing you When Your Job is Literally Killing You When your job is literally killing you, its time to pay attention. Cases in point: I was at a conference this past week providing career coaching advice, and three separate individuals sat down in front of me with two very different stories about how their job was hurting them. One person was in a situation where her client had her running morning, noon, and night which meant 90-hour work weeks. It was high-intensity, high-volume work with unrelenting requests from the customer. She wasnt getting any help, despite a sympathetic boss whose hands were tied by the executives above him. The person sitting in front of me literally had tears running down her cheeks the entire time we talked. It was like the moment I asked her why she set up the appointment for a career coaching session, the flood gates opened. She was very dignified despite her emotional distress. But as we talked, she revealed that she had to get out of this employment, yet had no time to even conduct a job search. And then, she said she had a heart incident the previous summer, and is now currently on high blood pressure medicine. This woman was literally a heart attack waiting to happen. I asked her when was the last time she had any fun, and she just blinked at me. From that reaction, I guessed that it had been a long time. When your job is literally killing you, the signs are tough to see at first. Or maybe you dont want to see them. Panic attacks, elevated heart rates, fear, being sick to the stomach, headaches, skyrocketing blood pressure those are all signs. So is depression. Case #2: involved another woman who had recently left BossZilla who had an old-school clamp down, control-freak management style that left staff quivering in their boots. She told me that he even started pacing outside the restroom when employees took necessity breaks, timing them and complaining if they didnt get done fast enough. This person, too, had heart problems. Like 3 incidents that sent her to the emergency room with preliminary markers in her blood for the enzyme that is a precursor to heart attacks. Her stress was so high that she was nearly a victim of the stress that was killing her. And she was only 28 at the time. Case #3: Involved a person in a situation where her immediate boss was likely having an affair with a much-younger employee within a government agency. She started as a fresh-out-of-college, no experience at all, attractive intern and quickly rose to a director level based on his favoritism, despite much more qualified staff ready with demonstrated work histories. The staff were stymied because the actual head of the entire governmental organization is a good old boy and was looking the other way. The woman speaking to me said this whole situation was making her sick to her stomach, combined with several other highly unethical things the boss was doing. She was worried about when he would get caught, and then try to pin the blame on the rest of the staff in an attempt to direct attention from himself. Each of these cases point to the fact that when you job literally killing you, you have to take a good, long, hard look at yourself and realize this: You are highly unlikely to affect change on the job issue. You can, however, make change within yourself. And that means getting out. When your job is literally killing you, you cant wait. Your life, health, and future are at stake. Employers unwilling or unable to see the damage that they are causing to employees dont take steps to fix problem supervisors, unfair work loads, unreasonable expectations, or unethical / illegal behavior, they arent going to intervene. They see YOU as disposable. Turn and burn, as they say. So what you need to do is realize that its time to take action when your job is literally killing you. Find a way to get out. But heres what you need to do to prioritize things so you can make a successful transition: Take a vacation day. Self care is important, so do something that is fun, revitalizes you, or is something you enjoy. TURN OFF YOUR PHONE AND DONT ANSWER EMAIL. This is YOU time. Take sick time. This counts. When your job is literally killing you, you are SICK. Take a day(s) off to get away from work to get nuts-and-bolts serious about your job search. Spend a day networking. Take the time to update your resume. Apply for jobs. Set up an informational interview. Do SOMETHING that will positively contribute towards moving you forward in getting out of your current situation. If your boss isnt the problem and is receptive, try approaching them to discuss the issues. I wanted to come to you to discuss my workload. In order to provide the continued quality of service to our projects/clients, I need to let you know that the current rate is not sustainable. I want to do the work, but I am burning out and need your help. If you have the financial security, get out now. This situation is costing you your health and well-being. The job may pay well, but the cost might be greater. Get help. Find a mentor, counselor, etc. who can act as a sounding board and trusted resource to help you cope. You likely are suffering from PTSD from the situation. It is so important to not throw up your hands. You have choices always. They may not be easy or straightforward. They are often scary ones. But life is often full of scary things but many times, they look a lot worse than what the reality actually is. Hang in there, have faith in yourself, and remember: You and you alone are the only person driving your career. Its up to you to take charge.
